Client Challenge

Treating patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Each patient presents a unique blend of symptoms, requiring personalized care plans and fast, accurate decision-making. The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) came to ttcInnovations with a crucial mission:

“Help our patient-facing teams sharpen their clinical judgment in treating COPD—because every second, every choice, matters.”

The learning needed to go beyond theory. CHEST wanted an immersive, practical experience where staff could practice real-time decision-making in the dynamic, high-pressure environment they face daily. The goal? To boost both confidence and competence in delivering personalized care across a spectrum of complex COPD cases.

Unshuffling the Nuances of COPD

To mirror the unpredictable nature of treating COPD, we crafted an interactive card game designed to challenge and hone clinical decision-making skills.

Each card represented a unique patient profile—complete with symptoms, history, and a proposed treatment plan. Players were tasked with evaluating each scenario and determining:

  • Correct Treatment? Place it in the left pile.
  • Incorrect Treatment? Right pile.

With every decision, learners practiced assessing nuanced patient cases, identifying red flags, and reinforcing best practices—all within a low-risk, engaging environment that encouraged critical thinking and composure under pressure.

This wasn’t just learning. It was a hands-on experience designed to sharpen clinical instincts and improve real-world outcomes for patients living with COPD.

Setting the New Standard

The COPD Treatment Card Game didn’t just meet expectations, it set a new standard for interactive learning in healthcare.

  • Award-Winning Innovation: The experience earned top honors at the 29th Annual Communicator Awards, recognized by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts for its creative approach to advancing medical education.
  • Real-World Readiness: Staff felt equipped with enhanced diagnostic confidence, better prepared to handle the complexities of COPD care with precision and grace.
  • Memorable Engagement: By blending game-based mechanics with clinical rigor, CHEST delivered an experience that stuck—boosting retention and decision-making skills where it mattered most: patient care.
