In today’s rapidly evolving workplace, one size fits all learning just doesn’t work. That is something Dr. Darick Bryant, Director of Learning and Organizational Development at Clean Harbors, knows very well. With over 25 years of leadership experience and a passion for helping others grow, Dr. Bryant has seen firsthand how personalized learning strategies can transform both people and organizations.

Why Personalized Learning Matters

For Dr. Bryant, learning and development is not about following a template. It is about recognizing that every employee brings unique skills, values, and goals to the table. Designing individualized career pathways not only supports professional growth but also makes employees feel genuinely valued. In his words, “When someone creates something specifically for you, it makes you feel appreciated and understood.” That feeling, he says, drives engagement, retention, and team performance.

From Power Driven to People Focused

Dr. Bryant admits his leadership philosophy has not always been people first. Early in his career, he saw leadership as a position of authority. But hitting a professional wall changed everything. Life experiences taught him that true leadership is about connection, humility, and serving others. Today, he embraces servant leadership, focusing on behaviors that inspire rather than commands that compel.

Measuring What Matters

Learning programs only matter if they create impact. Dr. Bryant’s approach to measuring success includes:
  • Assessing skills during and after training through real world scenarios
  • Ensuring manager involvement in ongoing coaching
  • Linking learning initiatives to business metrics like engagement, retention, and customer satisfaction
For him, it is not enough to deliver knowledge. It is about ensuring skills are applied in the workplace and tied to organizational goals. Shaping Mindsets Around Learning One challenge Dr. Bryant often encounters is shifting the perception that a single course equals readiness for advancement. He encourages employees to view learning and development as a marathon, not a sprint. It is a continuous journey built from many experiences, not a one time event.

The Exciting Future of L&D

Dr. Bryant is particularly energized by two trends:
  1. AI as a Resource – From chatbots that help leaders practice tough conversations to tools that convert PowerPoints into digital learning, AI is expanding what is possible in training. The key, he says, is remembering that AI should be a resource, not the sole source.
  2. Skill Based Development – Beyond IQ, emotional intelligence (EQ) and transferable skills are becoming critical for leadership success. Dr. Bryant is developing a competency framework to map skills to roles and align them with organizational values.

A Journey Fueled by Service

Interestingly, Dr. Bryant did not set out to work in learning and development. With a degree in criminal justice, his early career was in law enforcement and human services. But a chance opportunity to mentor youth sparked a passion for helping others grow. That passion carried him through industrial services and into leadership development, eventually earning him a master’s in organizational leadership and a doctorate in strategic leadership. At the heart of his journey is service. As he puts it, “Regardless of how much success I achieve, my life is solely a life of service.”

Looking Ahead

Alongside his role at Clean Harbors, Dr. Bryant runs Bryant Training and Consulting with his wife, offering leadership development and consulting services to organizations of all kinds. For him, it is another way to give back, inspire change, and keep growing long after retirement.
