EP 42: Future of Work: Why L&D Must Shift from Checkbox Training to Business Impact

In today’s fast-changing world of work, the role of Learning and Development (L&D) has never been more critical. On this episode of Learning Matters, I sat down with Colin Platt, Senior VP and National Training Leader at Aon, to talk about the strategies shaping the future of workplace learning. With more than 30 years in business and 17 of those at Aon, Colin recently stepped into the L&D space and brings a unique perspective from his background in growth, strategy, and people development.

Aligning L&D with Business Needs

Colin made it clear that the most important strategy for L&D today is alignment. Gone are the days when HR was primarily administrative. Today, HR leaders sit at the same table as the CEO and CFO, driving strategy forward. For Colin, L&D must serve colleagues directly and position itself as an asset rather than just another task on the to-do list. Instead of pushing out generic courses, the focus should be on fewer, more impactful programs that meet real business needs. That means collaborating with leaders to set priorities and involving colleagues early in the process.

Shifting from Checkbox Training to Impactful Learning

Colin acknowledged that the speed of change in today’s workplace demands more than surface-level training. At Aon, leadership is increasingly focused on equipping people with both technical expertise and people skills. For example, their long-running Mastering Client Interactions (MCI) program continues to deliver measurable results. One team was even able to secure a major client shortly after completing the training. It is this combination of hard skills and people skills that Colin believes will define success in the years ahead.

Creating Buy-In with Colleagues

One challenge every L&D professional faces is learner fatigue. With employees overwhelmed by constant demands, how do you make training feel like a benefit instead of a burden? Colin’s approach is to co-create priorities with leaders and colleagues, then design experiences that are digestible, practical, and supportive of their day-to-day work. Bite-sized content, clear communication, and visible impact all help colleagues see L&D as a tool for leveling up rather than just another checkbox.

The Role of AI in Learning at Aon

Of course, no conversation about the future of L&D would be complete without touching on AI. Aon has formed a global AI committee to explore thoughtful implementation. They have even launched Aon ChatGPT, an internal tool that helps colleagues draft communications, conduct research, and find information faster. Colin emphasized that while efficiency is important, Aon is taking a long-term view. The focus is on introducing AI in ways that empower people without rushing ahead of the unknowns.

Priorities Ahead: Onboarding, Compliance, and People Skills

Looking to the future, Aon is focusing on three big areas:
  • Onboarding – Ensuring new colleagues feel equipped from day one.
  • Compliance and Technical Training – Keeping teams sharp and client-ready in a professional services environment.
  • People Skills Development – Elevating communication, presentation, and client engagement abilities that are not always taught but are critical to success.
Colin believes these efforts will help colleagues deliver not only technical excellence but also the relational skills that inspire client confidence.

From Growth Leader to L&D Champion

Colin’s journey into L&D is anything but traditional. With decades of experience in business development and strategy, he is bringing a commercial mindset to learning. He sees his role as an extension of his passion for people, helping colleagues unlock their potential while directly supporting business goals. His advice for young professionals is simple: find mentors and pursue your passion. Surround yourself with people who are further along the path and be willing to ask what work truly inspires you.

Final Thoughts

The conversation with Colin was a reminder that L&D is no longer a side function. It is a strategic driver of business success. By aligning with leadership, focusing on impact, and introducing tools like AI thoughtfully, Aon is setting an example for how organizations can truly level up their people.
