Client Challenge

Mayo Clinic is leading a groundbreaking research initiative focused on addressing cardiovascular disease within the black community through a community-academic partnership model. The goal of the program is to engage underserved populations by working closely with local black churches, creating an accessible and supportive environment for participants to improve their health literacy—particularly in navigating digital health tools using smartphones.

The primary challenge lies in the digital divide experienced by many members of the target demographic. Participants are often novice smartphone users with limited exposure to digital platforms, internet navigation, or mobile health applications. As such, the training content needed to go beyond standard health education and instead prioritize foundational digital literacy skills.

Key Components of the Solution

  • Engaging Learning Journey: We introduced Donna, a relatable character whose heart health journey unfolds throughout the course. Her experiences reflect the common frustrations and barriers faced by underserved populations when adopting digital health tools.

  • Interactive eLearning Module: A self-paced, story-driven course designed to make digital health education engaging and approachable.

  • DHA Facilitator Resource: A fully customized guide to support Digital Health Advocates (DHAs) with talking points, discussion prompts, and instructional tools, ensuring impactful learning experiences for every participant.

This comprehensive approach empowers individuals with the knowledge and confidence to navigate digital healthcare ― closing the gap and fostering true health equity.
