Today, I have the pleasure of introducing our newest Innovator, Nicole Whitney! As a fellow golden dog momma who also enjoys a great mystery/thriller — I felt like a kindred spirit hearing her story. You might feel the same instant connection when you discover where you’ll find her at weddings, how she recovers from setbacks, and her all-time favorite classic rock bands. Nicole’s type A personality balances creativity with efficiency, and is the perfect addition to our team! Without further ado, meet Nicole, our new HR Specialist!
What is your background in HR?
Over the past five years, I’ve immersed myself in everything small business HR, from recruitment and onboarding to employee engagement. I learned quickly to be an efficient and critical problem solver, while working in a virtual, fast-paced consulting environment.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I was born and raised in Minnesota and make the most out of our short-lived summer. From May through September, you will find me outside barbecuing with my husband, John, while listening to classic rock (Fleetwood Mac and Prince are two of my favorites) or taking our mini Goldendoodle, Darby, for a walk around the lake.
During the winter, you will find me cuddled up with a book (likely of the mystery/thriller variety) or watching hockey — go Wild! I also love to cook and jump at the chance to host our family and friends — everything from homemade pot pie to scallops.
Coffee or tea and how do you take it?
Coffee with a splash of cream!
What three things might surprise us about you?
- As a child, I was terrified of animals (dogs in particular). Thankfully, I overcame this fear and now have a puppy of my own.
- I am the greatest sleeper. No matter how stressed or excited, I am always able to put in a solid eight hours of snooze time.
- At a wedding, you will always find me on the dance floor. Always.
What’s your real-life superpower?
I am a world-class listener and consider that my superpower. I enjoy the act of observing and am able to strongly empathize, sympathize and become engrossed in others’ interests easily.

Which of our four core values resonates with you and why?
Can I put down all four? I can tell you the one that most excites me is innovation. As a type A individual, the idea of implementing new ideas to create value is something that really captivates me — the union of creativity with efficiency.
What is your all-time favorite book and why?
Oh, so hard to choose! But I’ll go with Term Limits by Vince Flynn. My dad passed along his copy when I was a teenager and it sparked a lifetime love for thrillers — the more conspiracy, the better.
What’s the best professional advice you’ve ever received?
The best professional advice I’ve ever received was unintentionally provided by a previous manager who simply stated, “Don’t dwell on the setback; absorb the lesson and move on.” I have a tendency to overthink and meticulously replay any given situation over and over again in my head. I continue to remind myself not to waste energy on setbacks and rather put that energy into the lesson and getting one step closer to the goal.

What’s one thing you think everyone should do in their lifetime?
Travel and experience places outside our comfort zone.
What are you most excited about in your new role?
I am most excited to be working with such an amazing team. I have been onboard for only a short time but can already attest that the passion and integrity of this team is on another level.
